Sing Live Summer School Programme 2008

Sunday 13th July to Saturday 19th July 2008

We have talked about it for years, so it is fitting that we should finally launch our first summer school in our 10th Anniversary year!

The summer school will cover many different musical styles including those we are already familiar with and give you a taste of some of the new themes to come in the next ten years.  It will cover totally different types of singing - including Gospel and introduce you to the fantastic world of American Show Choir singing – totally new to the UK!  Plus atmospheric music from the movies – even singing along to the action on big screen projection.  It will also give you the opportunity to carry on our tradition of singing in exciting places, with the chance to sing at York Minster, (one of the great cathedrals in the world) Castle Howard, a beautiful stately home near York, and Whitby Abbey, an ancient historic heritage site. There will also be two evening demonstrations, one for dramatic theatre make-up and one for percussion.

Our summer school will be held on The Thorpe Underwood Estate, near York at Queen Ethelburga’s Private School.  Located in 100 acres of park land with an enclosed, walled, ‘secret’ garden, a formal rose garden, a fountain and acres of informal lawns.  Thorpe Underwood Hall itself sits in the middle of the school grounds and is a magnificent Tudor style building.

Accommodation will be on a full board basis and all bedrooms will be en-suite with flat screen TV/Videos, tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, radio/tape/CD music centre and ironing facilities.  The rooms can accommodate up to four people. There is also a non residential option.

The summer school will be open to all our companies plus friends and families, aged 16 plus, the dates are:

Sunday 13th July to Saturday 19th July 2008

The opportunity will be provided to sing different styles of music and also includes the opportunity to sing in some very ‘exciting places’. As well as enjoying the myriad of styles of music that we are already familiar with we will also be exploring gospel and American show choir singing.  We will be concentrating on group choral work and will be showcasing our work at the end of the week in the walled gardens of Queen Ethelburga’s.

We will be singing at Castle Howard (where Brideshead Revisited was filmed).  It is a beautiful 18th century palace sitting in 1,000 acres of diverse gardens.  It’s collections are world renowned and include paintings, porcelain, statuary and furniture.  Admission to the house and gardens is included in this package.  We will also be singing at Whitby Abbey.  We will be visiting Whitby, a charming seaside town, with plenty to do and see and we will sing at the Abbey which is an English Heritage site, dating back to 657 AD.  Plus the wonderful opportunity to sing at York Minster, one of the great cathedrals of the world and the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe.  We will spend some time in York which is a vibrant, historic city full of culture, history and shoe shops!

There will also be two evening demonstrations.  A dramatic theatre make-up demonstration by Christine Castle from Granada and Yorkshire TV and a percussion demonstration from Ian Matthews, our percussionist with the National Festival Orchestra.

ITINERARY
The following is intended to give you an insight into how the week will run.  At this stage the timings are provisional, and to be confirmed.

It is anticipated that the entire group will cover all the different styles of singing, so the emphasis is very much on choral work and singing together to explore the different music.  The size of the classes and how many different workshops will run simultaneously will be determined by the number of people on the course.  There will be options to study some styles in more depth, depending on your preferences, so the application form will include a section for you to tell us what your favourites are, so we can produce a timetable based on final numbers.  This will be sent out to you for you to make your final choices.

Also included is two demonstrations and three trips!  There will be a dramatic theatre make-up demonstration by Christine Castle from Granada and Yorkshire Television and a Percussion demonstration from Ian Matthews our long-time percussionist with the National Festival Orchestra.

Our trips include a visit to Whitby, with the chance to visit the Abbey and to sing in the ruins.  A trip to Castle Howard with the opportunity to look around this stately home and to sing on the South Front steps.  Plus the wonderful opportunity to sing at York Minster.  We will spend some time in York.
